Travel Diaries – Caravan Holiday in York
Caravan Holiday in York
When the CC set up Rowntree Park they obviously thought location, location, location. It is just outside of the centre of York, right on the banks of the River Ouse. With some trepidation, we followed the route that is described on the club’s website almost to the centre of York from the A19 and the A64. However, barring one scare as a cyclist cut me up on the inside we got there in one piece. Exit from the site is, however, a whole new ball game and directions for this are posted in the information room.
The main site is well laid out but on our Friday evening stay, it was nearly full.
We opted to try out the riverside annexe. Here, as is the case with the rest of the site, pitches are hard standing and accessed via a very narrow and secure gated lane. Through the bare trees, we could actually see the river.
The site is in a city so it’s noisy. On Friday and Saturday night it was very noisy. This might have been different on the main site which is set back from the road.
Staff and facilities are up to the usual CC standard and I felt that the whole site was run like a well-ordered ship (they are used to water, even the EHUs are on stilts, and have a look at the cocoa grinding wheels in front of the main building, it has a flood marker on it which is a real eye-opener).
The big thing about this site is York; what a fantastic city. It is steeped in history and there are hoards of shops. There is no shortage of things to do in York but to name a few there is York Minster the largest gothic cathedral, the (free) railway museum, the castle museum, Clifford’s Tower, The York Dungeon, ghost walks, the shambles and (if you have time) the town’s medieval wall walk.
Finally, if it’s nice weather, try a river cruise (the night time ones certainly sound fun, considering the amount of noise they made as they went by early on Saturday morning).
I can see why this site is always full; there is so much to do. So, if I can, I will go again and again and again.
